Working with a commute that takes 25 minutes compared to one that takes only 5 minutes has both good and bad points.
I have decided to work closer to home to reduce my commute time, and here’s why:
- I no longer need to worry about the cost of gas for my small car, which is only $30 per week, thus saving money on gas.
- There’s no need to concern myself with car maintenance anymore.
- I can afford to wake up later in the morning.
- I can leave for work just 10 minutes before my shift starts.
- I still get to spend quality time with my family after work.
- Though the wage may not be high, I save on gas and maintenance costs.
- I can potentially hold multiple jobs and maintain the same income without needing a lengthy commute.

However, if you work a job requiring more than an hour of commuting:
- In my experience, the fuel cost for a small car amount to around $200 per month.
- Car maintenance can cost at least $200 per month when saving in advance
- While the wage may be higher, when factoring in gas and maintenance expenses, you might end up earning the same as you would with a closer job.
- Consideration must be given to potential career development and experiences in a big city versus a small town.
- Ultimately, the decision to work close to home or farther away depends on various factors. Personally, I take into account my age, the time I spend with my family, and the financial aspects. If you’re young and enjoy the challenge of a longer commute or prioritize career advancement, working farther from home might be preferable. Just ensure you have a reliable car and sufficient savings for maintenance.
